I am a self-proclaimed “crazy cat lady”. My two cats have three scratching posts, a box of toys, and my kitten has three of her very own games that she plays on my IPad. (watch her playing here!)
I really do enjoy dog agility events, and hope to have a dog someday, but being around fellow cats of all kinds, I really enjoyed myself at the Cats and Shamrocks event at the Doubletree-Lloyd Center, March 14th and 15th . As a new vendor, it was so great to find myself welcomed by other vendors and participants alike, and I was fortunate to have had the chance to spend my entire weekend with them.
One highlight of my experiences at the event comes from the efforts of a cat rescue group, and a great idea for adopting out hard to adopt cats. This being for no other reason than the fact that they have been overlooked. A rescue group out of Longview will take their adoptable cats to these shows, and enter them in the show. When they win a ribbon (and all cats win at least a merit ribbon), the ribbon is displayed on the cage at humane society and adoption events. This in turn catches the eye of more folks, and the cat gets adopted. What a novel idea!
Besides seeing some of the cleanest Persians ever (as a veterinarian that says a lot!) and some beautiful exotics (I think the Somali cats have my vote at this point), this cat show also welcomed household cats to enter. As one judge said “We celebrate and love ALL cats!” I think this is so great, because as a veterinarian I promote the health and well-being of all cats as well. Maybe my kitten Maisy will enter next time….
Don’t forget, cats are a great candidate for laser therapy-consider treatments for conditions like arthritis, bladder infections, pancreatitis, stomatitis, anything that causes inflammation. Laser therapy is non-invasive, safe, and works quickly to cause pain relief and healing. Plus, it decreases the amount of medications you have to give. With cats, I think this is the biggest plus!
A big thank you to Carroll Muck and the McKenzie River Cat Club for letting us join the Cats and Shamrocks show!
